about

100% Live Improvisation, No Overdubs, No Rehearsals

This is the line recording of NBC's live improvisational performance on May 19, 2001, at the BLUE Warehouse on 136 Dore Alley in San Francisco's South of Market district. The "neighborhood" was a haven for all kinds of counter-culture artistry before multiple tech booms brought in high-priced apartment projects, pushing the "starving artists" out. The dilapidated warehouse was likely condemned, and the party we participated in was completely illegal, something I imagine to be very difficult to get away with in San Francisco today.

This recording is truly an audio engineer's nightmare, documenting what I consider one of NBC's most high-contrast anti-music performances, not just for the combination of clashing sounds and destruction of rhythms, but also for what ROBO labels NBC's "live chupa-mix!". There are some gorgeous moments of accidental brilliance ("Sterilize", "Skull Island", and "Wiggle It" come to mind) but I think we were really pushing the "sweet and sour" concept to the limit here.

Despite that, our relatively large audience responded by dancing with wild abandon to our experiments in "audio cognitive dissonance"... it was even rumored that an orgy was happening in a giant hammock in one of the corners behind the stage during the show... perhaps not a coincidence, considering many of the song titles.
Fast times in The City, indeed!

For best results, playback over large speakers or over-the-ear audiophile headphones is recommended; the uncompressed bass in this recording is likely to damage built-in laptop speakers or small headphones at full volume.

Often what resulted was a hybrid noise camouflaged as various forms of electroacoustic and electronic music. ... more
